Evolution of F1 🏎️ & Classical Music 🎵A Evolution of F1 🏎️ & Classical Music 🎵A huge thank you to the Singapore Grand Prix for the wonderful invitation—what an unforgettable weekend catching the action right from the Pit Grandstand!Standing trackside at Marina Bay brought back vivid memories of the early editions of the Singapore Grand Prix, when Formula 1 was pure, raw sensory overload with naturally aspirated V8 engines. With the deafening 19,000 RPM scream, the smell of burning rubber, & the heavy scent of high-octane fuel hanging in the humid night air, it was visceral & unapologetically mechanical.Today, those mechanical beasts have evolved into 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 hybrid power units. The roaring scream made way for lower turbo hums & high-pitched electric whines. Purists mourned the lost roar, yet the result speaks for itself: F1’s global audience surged past 800 million. By embracing sustainability & pairing world-class engineering with global concerts & festival culture, F1 proved that an elite, technical pursuit can modernise without losing its charm.Sitting at the Pit Straight during F1 weekend sparked a reflection on classical music education in the 21st century:- Tradition isn’t a museum piece: Just as motorsport didn’t die when the engine notes changed, classical music doesn't lose its soul when we rethink centuries-old, rigid training habits.- Modernising the interface, not lowering the standard: Modern hybrid F1 cars are quieter, yet significantly faster, safer, & more technologically sophisticated. In music pedagogy, embracing digital tools, modern interfaces, & creative formats doesn’t dilute technical rigor—it sharpens it.- Building cultural relevance: F1 expanded its audience base by connecting motorsport with pop culture & vibrant stage experiences. Providing a platform that balances formal presentation with genuine artistic support makes all the difference for developing musicians.Wearing two hats during the festival made the occasion doubly special. As a parent, watching my own little boy take the stage was an unforgettable moment. Tangible acknowledgments—like trophies 🏆 and certificates—offer these budding musicians the vital assurance and boost of confidence they need at this foundational stage. 23 years later, and the music still resonates just 23 years later, and the music still resonates just as clearly. 🤍🎹Reconnecting with our mentor, Dr. Chang, felt like stepping back into our student days at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. We were instantly transported back to those transformative masterclasses in Singapore and that unforgettable evening at Victoria Concert Hall, where we watched him perform Frédéric Chopin’s 4 Ballades. Those moments—the technical mastery combined with his genuine guidance—inspired us to take on the Chopin Ballades in our final year and, ultimately, inspired Laurence and me to become teachers ourselves. Your mentorship stays vividly with us in every lesson we give today.Beyond the stage, we fondly remember the simple joys of exploring Singapore together: trying local food and talking about music, life, and adventures far beyond the piano.Our hearts are so full of gratitude. It was inspiring to see the upgraded facilities at NAFA and imagine the young talents who will soon grace the stage. For more details on the LPPF, check out SMTA’s updates in the last photo!Evening, I had the privilege of gathering with Mdm NAFA President, all eight NAFA alumni chapters and the NAFA Alumni Relations Office. Learning about NAFA’s incredible growth and its exciting future plans left me hopeful and motivated.
