
Piano Teacher - Laurence Yu
Laurence Yu, a professional piano teacher and music educator.
With the deep love in music and strong believe in the link between music & humanity, Laurence has dedicated himself in music education since his teen years. Laurence has been continuously enriching his experiences and teaching inspirations in piano and music teaching as an all rounded musician.
As performer, Laurence is a prize-winning pianist of Trinity College London Music Competition & Music Essentials NAFA Concerto Competition, and has been performed as pianist and orchestral trombonist in local and oversea art scene (Korea, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau and Singapore.) Laurence was formerly the bass trombonist in Hong Kong Young Musicians’ Wind Orchestra, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Orchestra; formerly the principal pianist and keyboardist of The Philharmonic Winds; which allowed him to work with many world renowned musicians like, Dr Adam Frey, Dr Timothy Reynish, Dr Leonard Tan, Luis Alarcon and Russian National Orchestra.
As a music educator, Laurence first became a Piano Teacher in Rockwind Music (Hong Kong) when he was 16 and later a Senior Music Teacher at Agape Music School when he arrived in Singapore. Since 2009, Laurence has been actively conducting concert bands and choirs of Singapore Schools. Yu co-founded Asia Kodály Symposium and Kodály Academy of Music (Singapore) in 2014, and subsequently Scholar Cantorum (Singapore) in 2015 for providing continuous supports for music educators in the region.
Laurence was graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and received an Honors degree in Music validated by University of Wales and Diploma in Piano Performance with Distinction. His artistry was shaped by former head of keyboard, Mrs Rena Phua and concert pianist, Prof Boris Kraljevic. He also received the tuition from international artists such as Prof Patsy Toh, Dr Felix Chang, Prof Thomas Hecht, Mr Norman Lee, Dr Jung Hwa Lee, Prof Stefan Ammer, Late Mr Ong Lip Tat, Mr Dennis Lee and Mdm Toh Chi Hung, etc. Yu’s conducting skill were attained and trained under Eric Watson and renowned German conductor Volker Hartung.
Laurence is a Licentiate and Associate Trinity College London in piano performance and committee of Singapore Music Teachers’ Association (SMTA).
In these days, Laurence is dedicating his time in private piano teaching under 2pianoteachers, researches on piano studies, piano teachings and serving in Amazing Grace Presbyterian Church worship ministry as assistant choral director, pianist and chorister.
