Laurence Yu: Inspiring Music Educator and Accomplished Pianist

Laurence Yu is a passionate piano teacher and music educator who has dedicated himself to the pursuit of music education from a young age. With a deep love for music and a belief in its profound connection to humanity, Laurence continuously enriches his teaching experiences and draws inspiration as an all-rounded musician.

As a performer, Laurence has achieved notable success as a prize-winning pianist in competitions such as the Dynamicworkz Piano Competition, Trinity College London Music Competition and the Music Essentials NAFA Concerto Competition. He has showcased his talent as a pianist and orchestral trombonist in various local and overseas art scenes around Asia. Laurence has been a part of musical ensembles such as the Hong Kong Young Musicians’ Wind Orchestra, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Orchestra. Additionally, he formally served as the pianist and keyboardist of The Philharmonic Winds, collaborating with renowned musicians like Dr. Adam Frey, Dr. Timothy Reynish, Dr. Leonard Tan, Luis Alarcon, and the Russian National Orchestra.

Laurence’s passion for music education led him to become a piano teacher in Hong Kong at the age of 16. Since 2009, Laurence has been actively involved in directing concert bands and choirs in Singapore schools. In 2014, he co-founded the Asia Kodály Symposium and the Kodály Academy of Music (Singapore), providing continuous support to music educators in the region. Subsequently, he co-established Scholar Cantorum (Singapore), furthering his commitment to supporting music educators.

Laurence holds a degree in Music validated by the University of Wales and a Diploma in Piano Performance with Distinction from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). His artistry was shaped by his mentors, Mrs. Rena Phua, the former head of the keyboard department, and Prof. Boris Kraljevic, a renowned concert pianist. Laurence is also a Licentiate and Associate of Trinity College London in piano performance and serves as the Honorary Treasurer of the Singapore Music Teachers’ Association (SMTA).

Currently, Laurence dedicates his time to private piano teaching, research on piano studies and teaching methods under 2pianoteachers and Artists Music Studio. He also served as the assistant choral director, pianist, and chorister in the worship ministry of Amazing Grace Presbyterian Church. Through his multifaceted musical endeavors, Laurence continues to inspire and uplift both students and fellow musicians.
